I'm part of a group message with my wife and 2 other people. Last night, my phone shut off when the battery died, but the conversation continued. When my phone powered up again, none of the messages that I missed while offline were delivered to my phone.

Sounds like a bug, maybe specific to group messages? I know that at least my wife has send via SMS enabled.

What do you think?

I also came on here to see if anyone else had a similar problem, I'm in a group conversation with a couple of friends and we're finding it's coming up not delivered on almost all of the messages we're exchanging, yet receiving the messages is fine. Though the issues aren't the same, I wonder if they're somehow related, the service might just be being flaky.

When sending to a single recipient, the device that sends the message tries to send you an iMessage for around 10 minutes. If it doesn't work it should switch to send a regular text (if the sender device is still on and the option is enabled in settings).
When sending to groups, at the time of the first try, the device checks if everyone is on iMessage; if someone is not reachable via iMessage, the device should switch the entire message to MMS group messaging (MMS needs to be ON). This is were I know that strange things can happen as MMS messaging is not supported well by every carrier and obviously not all iMessages account can be reached using MMS.
