I purchased a MacBook Pro 16" in September 2020. I received a 2019 version, so I was disappointed right away. my messaging app worked just fine for about a month then started doing this issue. Even after I downloaded Big Sur it continued to occur. The easiest way to describe my problem is with a screenshot. It separates my discussion with anyone with android phones! Please help, I've spent literally hours on the phone with Apple Non Support and no one can assist me. Ergo, I've joined your forum. Thanks for any help.

Seems like an option is turned on somewhere or this is a 'feature' of the program. I'm not familiar with this problem so I can't say. Try the options.

Random thought - make sure you're sending "to" the same phone # / format as the messages are being received in.

Does the same thing happen on your phone, or just the computer?

You also may wish to post your question in the macOS forum or iOS / iPhone forums as this is more likely associated with those than it is just the MacBook Pro.

Yes I am sending & receiving to the same #. I've had Iphones for 15 years or more and never had this happen (and it isn't happening now on the phone). What is ridiculous is that it worked just fine for a month or so then this window separation issue.
Thanks for the reply and I will go to OS forum as you suggest.

I used to have this happen on Catalina until I did a system reboot. That would merge them back together. I can’t remember this happening recently though... It only happened when I was texting my wife - who had an iPhone so I don’t think this is a problem with SMS only.

Depending on if you care about SMS history - you can try deleting the thread without a picture and see if they merge? (This may delete SMS history).

It began with Catalina and I don't know how to perform system reboot....unless you mean do a shut down and restart. I really could live with it but my children are the main people with androids.

SMS history, by that you mean my message history with that person only, right? I have deleted the duplicates several times and it always comes back with 2 windows for those android peeps.

Yeah it started in Catalina for me too - though it was really rare. Yeah just a reboot - shutdown and restart usually fixed it for me. A few times I had to delete the ghost thread and that also fixed it for me.

Yeah just SMS history for that specific person.
