iMessage on iPad and iPhone

Ok, so I am trying to set up iMessage to recieve messages on both my iPad and my iPhone at the same time so I can switch from one device to eachother. Currently I am getting nothing on my iPad at all. iMessage is working fine on my phone, but nothing is coming through on my iPad. Any ideas? I tried looking through the recent threads and can't seem to find what I am looking for.
