iMessage on iPad issue

Hey, ran into an issue with iMessage when trying to message my wife. We both have iPads; she has the 2, I have the first gen.

We share an Apple ID for the store, but have independent Apple ID accounts set up for iMessage. Both are set up through gmail accounts.

We are able to manage other people through iMessage, but not each other. On both ends, it says the other user is not a registered user.

Any idea what's going wrong here? Thanks!
