hi
I have iPhone 4S. I am having some strange issue with iMessage.

Under iMessage setting if my Caller ID is set to my iphone number then --> I can only receive iMessage at my cell phone number. But if i try to send iMessage to my Email address which is second id for iMessage under iMessage setting, it does not work. This email address is also my Apple ID. No matter what i do. iMessage to my email does not work.

But if i change my setting under iMessage caller ID to my Email address from cell phone number then it works. I can get iMessage at my email address now BUT iMessage stops working at my cell phone number now.

So is this Normal? or i should be able to get iMessage at both IDs. my cell number and email.

Please give you advise if you know how to fix this.

Thanks.

in Settings->Messages there is a section that says "you can be reached for messages at:"

Make sure both your phone number and your email address are there.

Yes. Both cell and Email are listed under that setting.

I have an iPad and an iPhone 4S, shouldn't I be able to see all my iMessages on my iPad as well? The conversations don't seem to be syncing, how do i set up iMessage on my iPad using my phone number?

I have the same problem falcora. I tout all iMessages convos would sync to iMessages on the iPad. From what I can tell they will only show up if I start a convo on my iPad with that person and even then the full conversation from my iPhone only transfers over for some of the contacts. Ie. with my brother only the messages I started on my iPad show up as the first message then it continues to sync all subsequent ones from iPhone. With my friend, messages I started on iPhone and continued on iPad are ALL there...

The other big issues is that even though my friends have my gmail account saved in my contact card on their phone (my gmail is my Apple ID), when they get messages from my iPad it shows up as from my email address rather than from my contact card.

E.g. Pretend this is the format on the iPhone/iPad of another person getting messages from me. The two separate messages are from two devices that are both using the same apple ID...

Let's hang out later

iMessages doesn't seem to sync as quickly as it does with things like my contacts, etc. over the cloud.

Glad to see I'm not the only one having this issue.. it's annoying that the conversations between my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 aren't continuing together. Isn't that how it was supposed to work in the first place?

My wife and I both have an iPhone and an iPad, both are in sync with each other. On my phone, in messages, I have my mobile number and my apple ID listed, with my caller ID set to my apple ID. On my iPad, my email is set to the same Apple ID that's on my iPhone, plus an alternate email, which is my @me email address. The iPad caller ID is et to my Apple ID. No syncing issues, and each device shows the same conversation, beginning to end.

What does your Caller ID show up as when phoning others? The Caller ID setting in Messages is restricted only to Messages & nothing changes in the Phone display?

If your email is in the contact phone book of the person your talking to, your name (or whatever they might call you) will be displayed. My wife's iPad shows my name, not my email address. Phone calls will not have any relation to "caller ID" in messages.

guys this is actually not as complicated as it sounds. but, it is annoying.

if your caller id is set to phone number, you will only have conversations on the iPhone.

if your caller id on your iPhone and iPad are set to your apple id, they will all sync perfectly.

if someone sends you an iMessage to your phone number, no dice. it must be your apple id or they won't sync.

OK, thanks. Can you tell if it matters how the email address in Contacts is categorized (i.e. Main, Work) in order to be effective or are all listed email addresses noted?

Annoying is putting it mildly. Of everyone that I know of within my daily life, only 4 people are using iPhones & we've all gotten unlimited text plans in order to accommodate the rest of the non-believers. ;) I appreciate the posting of that info because I'm sure it will help others, too. :)

As long as the email you are using for your called ID is listed under youR contact information in their phone, it shouldn't matter. No matter which ID I use, my wife's iPad shows my name at the top. The only way to see which ID I'm actually using on her end is to click contact info in the upper right hand corner (on the iPad at least, not sure how to see that on the iPhone)
