Hey all, just a question about iMessage (obviously) i can't seem to find any straight forward information.

I have set mine up. So lets say in the settings -> Messages -> Receive at it shows

Phone: my number here
Email: my apple id email here (a hotmail one)

So. If my partner is on her iPhone running iOS 5 and has iMessage set up too etc etc, If she goes to write a new message and chooses my name from her contact list, which only has my phone number in.

Will the iPhones recognise that my phone number has been linked to iMessage and therfor to my apple id, and try to send it as a iMessage. And if i am connected to a Wi Fi, it will arrive on my phone, and if i am not connected to a Wi-fi it will fail, and send as a text instead.

Or have i completely misunderstood this, and she needs to add my email address too, as a new contact, or in the existing contact? Thanks :)

(Phew!)

A friend of mine just sent me an iMessage without ever having known my Apple ID. So, I assume there is a ping process going on at the time you send the first message in a conversation that is invisibly stored in a contact, to some degree. It would seem, then, that people who wish to iMessage you needn't add your ID - phone number should suffice.

Had some trouble with this also. Trying to set up a family members IMessage, and it was verifying the phone number but I could enter an email address. Well, when I was sending a message to my phone it would come up as the email address and not the phone number. Once I got rid of the email address, it worked as it should with just the phone number.

I just setup my daughters iPhone 3GS.

I edited her contact card on my phone and added her email address too it, its the same one she has listed under messages on her phone.

When creating a new message, i typed her name in and obviously it brought her up and i could choose her name with her mobile number, and her name and her email address.

If i chose the mobile number, it stayed as a SMS.

If i chose the email address, it changed over to iMessage.

Seems a bit clumsy to me. I sort of assumed you would just choose the contact, and the phone figured out if it was iMessage or SMS

It won't recognized that it's linked - it will recognize that you're also on iOS 5 on an iOS Device. Because of that, you'll receive an iMessage, rather than an SMS Message.

You don't have to do anything. If you're sending a message to someone else running iOS 5.0 on an iOS Device, you're set, as long as both people have iMessage on. :)

iMessage problem: not my phone number

I just enabled iMessage in settings, but instead of my number where it says (Receive At) it shows my wife's number instead. I want to change it to my number but the number if grayed out and won't allow me to.

How can I change it??

How does it work with linked devices? If the kids are playing with the iPad, are they going to get notifications of every text I get on my phone?

I kinda agree with the post above, it feels a bit unintuitive. And seems to create as many issues as it tries to address...

Really trying to not come across as an idiot or a moaner here!

Got daughters phone infront of me. She does not have my email address or anything, just my phone number.

Started up a message and typed in my name and chose it from contact list. Straight away it changed to iMessage. Awesome.

Went on my phone, typed her name in, Nope. Still SMS. Exactly the same settings on both phones, It's odd!
