iMessage sender "uknown" after backup and restore

I upgraded from iPhone 5 to 6. I backed up the 5 on my Mac and set up the 6 from this backup. My brother's messages now show up as "unknown" and I cannot respond. Please help.
 
It has resolved itself after a network setting reset and power cycle. Weird.
