so when you hold down on the message from a iMessage, (like copy n paste), you can send as Text Message. i did this by accident. now how to get back to iMessage with this person?

Just send another one (without the holding down part). I've had coversations go back and forth between the same person. Started in iMessage, ended up sending a couple a text and then next one back to iMessage. I didn't know holding down on send can do that. Maybe that's how me or the other party is messing up too. I have noticed if the iMessage doesn't get through it will give you an option to send as a text.

Should be automatic. I tried this (the tap-and-send-as-SMS thing) and it went through as an SMS and shortly afterwards we were iMessaging again. Didn't have to do anything to return to iMessaging between devices.

I'm sure it has something to do with the ping to check whether the user is able to use iMessages. If you don't get a response, it probably defaults to text. I had this happen when my friend's phone was on Airplane mode.
