So I guess this is "how it is" but they need to fix this.

When using iMessage at the top of the "text" thread it shows the phone number and not the name.

When it comes up in notifications it shows the name but in the actual "text app" it just shows the phone number...

terrible...

other than that I like the iMessage... but am i missing something here? Poor.

Probably. Mine shows the name of the person I am chatting with

Do you have that person's phone number in your contacts list in the same format, i.e. 555-555-5555 or (555) 555-5555, that it's showing in iMessage?

Well what happened on mine was that for some reason my address book got wiped when i updated. So I restored from backup again (connect to iTunes, right click on device, select restore from backup)… check if your contacts are still there in address book...

yea... it doesn't show up as anything in the text app but the phone number... I even went to the top of the app and added it to contact so it is the full 1+ (area code) number... and it still is just the number...

i've read that that is just how it is going to be.

Not for me. If I have the contact in my address book, I get their name.
Where did you find this "thats just how its going to be" excuse?

I had the same issue and was able to fix it by quitting the messages app:

1. Exit the Messages app
2. Double tap the home button to bring up the running apps
3. Hold the Messages icon until they shake and click the delete icon
4. Restart Messages

I had this happen..I dunno if what I did fixed it, but here's what I did:

1.) Deleted my friend's iPhone phone number from his contact information.
2.) Added their number back to their contact information by choosing "Add to Contact" in the message chain.
3.) Deleted the entire message chain and re-messaged my friend. It now showed his name.

The sfwalter solution worked for me too:
Make the imessage app icon dance
Tap the x to delete
The icon was still there, but the names now appear in messages "to"
