iMessage sync with mac

I have a 2016 macbook pro my imessages used to sync with my mac but they no longer do. I only use imessage with my phone number and both my phone and macbook are signed into the same icloud account. When I go to preferences in imessage on my mac and click sync now nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

I don't know. Messages on my 2018 Mac mini running latest Catalina don't work either. I checked Apple's support documents and the relevant article explains what to do. But it doesn't work. I like Apple stuff but this is complete rubbish.

Funny mine worked on my Mini with Catalina for the first few months I had it. Updated to the Big Sur beta in September, and mine doesn't sync anymore either. I have ONE conversation, luckily its the misses, that does stay in sync, but everything else on my Mac is like 4 months behind where it is on my iPhone.
