iMessage vs SMS (blue/green)?

Watching all the videos, I can't see how Apple implemented the Blue vs Green send button to notify you if an iMessage or SMS will be sent.

Is it simply the color of the text on the send button?

It's the contact name at the top

For new conversations that is. For existing conversations it looks like it wont let you select...

Actually, in the text field, there is "Message" or "iMessage" written before you start typing.
After you start typing, the color of the text of the "Send" button shifts from gray to blue or green (it's very subtle because it's very thin).

Perfect. I travel overseas a lot and like to know before I send a text whether or not I'm gonna get charged for it.
