Whenever I send an iMessage, the recipient responds by asking why I'm sending messages from my Gmail (the same email I use for my apple ID). I tried going under "receive at" in the iMessage settings, but my phone number isn't listed there, only my gmail. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

I've tried a lot of the responses in this thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3385682?start=15&tstart=0), but none of them have worked.

Is this on an iPhone or on an iPad or touch? I don't think there currently is a way to "receive at" your phone number if you're not on an iPhone, which really bothers me too.

Nope, iPhone 4. I've tried everything I can think of but nothing seems to work...

T-Mobile. Jailbroken/unlocked iPhone 4 on iOS5.

that's why.. your number needs to be activated on an official carrier.

same problem here in Canada with my friend. he's using the iPhone on an unsupported carrier (in terms of them carrying the iPhone), and it won't let him activate his number..

Ahhh even if imessage works fine? If this is the case then that's a real bummer...
