I used to have an iPhone but have since switched over to the Galaxy S7 and ever since then I've been unable to send iMessages from my Macbook to non Apple ID's. I've logged in and out but to no avail. Do I have to have an active iPhone in order to be able to enjoy the ease of iMessages on my Mac?

Sending messages to non-Apple phones is done using SMS/MMS, which is a carrier service. So yes, it requires an iPhone.
