imessages on desktop not working properly

hello everyone

i know there are several different issues with imessages on iphones, but my problem is with the desktop messages. for a few weeks now, both my imac and macbook pro show phone numbers instead of names. i've scanned here, and the whole internet, but didn't find a fix. it's really frustrating as i don't know any numbers by heart.

does anyone else have this problem? does anyone have a solution to this? or is it just broken.

I have come across this before unfortunately it didn't work for me (i don't seem to have two categories, contacts and all contacts) but thanks
