Hi,

Anyone have an idea on why iMessages in iCloud isn't ready yet ?
This was the One feature I was waiting on with iOS 11. And during the beta it used to work pretty well, at least in my experience.

I was hoping 11.1 would bring it but no... Now 11.2 launches the first beta and still nothing. Even Airplay 2 or ApplePay Cash are beginning to be tested/available. Sounds like iMessages on iCloud is the last feature announced that's not available.

Thanks for your input

All we know is that it's not out so far. We can perhaps theorize and basically guess as to why--essentially that it's not ready--but that's about it.

By "knowing" I meant "guessing" you are write.
Just surprised that a feature that actually worked is delayed. Can't see what is holding them back... iCloud is already syncing some big chunks of data.

I am waiting on this feature to free some space AND finally be able to not worry about iCloud full backups. And this way anyone could do a fresh install in case of any bugs that Genius Bar are unable to help with. Plus of course the sync between devices so I can stop deleting some messages twice (especially the "one time codes" we are getting more and more for security reasons)

Because for a large amount of testers it wasn’t working properly. They would hit the sync button but the last synced time didn’t update.

Had this issue the first time, reported it. Then got an answer from some Apple person and after that it worked (not sure if it was with another beta, but I think so)
Guessed they worked everything out and stopped having it live until the GM ... would be surprised if they totally shut it down.

My experience was that it would never finish syncing. It would say syncing and never complete. Also, it messed up delivery of messages between my iMac, MacBook, iPhone and iPad. Personally I'm pleased they are delaying this so they can get it working properly, as opposed to rushing it out to satisfy people's impatience.

Yes but delaying without testing is not delaying ;)
They are testing this extensively internally. They probably came to the consensus that beta testers’ text messages and important data was too risky to be testing this service on. I agree, glad they are waiting till it’s ready and glad they aren’t testing it on my entire iMessage history.

Given that Notes is still often very laggy and/or fails to update across devices, Messages in iCloud seems rather audacious. My whole Notes collection is probably 5 MB; my Messages database was over 2 GB when I cleaned it out last week.

Never had an issue with Notes and didn't lost any messages while using the sync service in Beta and my iMessage is more than the double of yours (4,5GB...)
So I wouldn't say iCloud isn't reliable, at least not in my experience (same goes for my wife as another example)

So two people with a good experience is reliable?

:)
Just saying it wasn't completely "not working". Here we have 2 persons saying :
1) one person that a lot of people had issues with it, but no actual data to support it
2) one person that syncing wasn't finishing (FYI I also had this issue which was finally solved.. just saying)

So no, I am not convinced at all these are enough reasons to remove a feature and stop testing it at all without any official statement. And by the way, people have been losing data here and there because of Betas... because a beta should never be used on a device that you absolutely need to rely on...

Anyway, seems you are all "against" this feature more than you have an idea on what is going on with it (even though you were free to activate it or not by the way). So I'll keep walking to fetch some people interested in discussing what could be the reason for this delay.

Have all a nice day ;)

iCloud works well when you have a rock-solid, always-on internet connection. It works a lot less well when the internet connection is a little slow, or you have multiple iOS devices that are on and offline (e.g., when traveling, especially internationally). Love the concept, just have trouble trusting it completely, especially as a business owner.
