When I type an iMessage from my iPhone it shows on my Mac, but when the person responds it only shows on my iPhone. On my iPhone I have set it to forward messages to my MacBook. Any ideas? Cheers

In order to receive the same messages on all your devices, you have to make sure the same number and email addresses are active on each device.

On your iPhone or iPad:

1) Go to Settings and tap Messages.

2) Tap Send & Receive.

3) Under “You can receive iMessages to and reply from,” make sure all the email addresses you use for iMessage on your other devices are active on this device as well.

On your Mac:

1) Open the Messages app and press Command + Comma (,) keys.

2) Click iMessage from the top.

3) Under “You can be reached for messages at,” make sure all emails and phone numbers you want to use are checked.

Also check if you’re on an old version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS, make sure you update to the latest available version.

I recently unchecked the emails addresses that were associated with my messages account. I read that this sometimes fragments the iMessages, meaning when sending an iMessage to someone it will show up as a new thread for example, hence why I unchecked them all on all my devices and just checked/ticked my cell number for use. I also have iMessages forwarded from my iPhone to my MacBook. Even using the sync option didn't bring all the text messages to my MacBook.

I believe that, at the very least, you should check the email address that is associated with your appleid/iCloud account, because that’s the main id that iMessage internally uses.

Thanks, I don't know why on my iPhone it not only has my cell number and Apple ID associated but also my other email addresses like gmail, hotmail yahoo etc. I will check them back and match that up with what's on my MacBook and see how it goes. Im just scared that a sync might occur which might overwrite my iMessages from the MacBook to the iCloud which will result in my iPhone losing many iMessages.

Just for clarification purposes this is what I’m referring to. Not sure why there are so many emails associated with my Apple ID?

They are probably collected from Appleid, but also from Mail and perhaps more places where emails are used, so you can associate all of them with iMessage if you want.
