I have a late-2011 MBP running High Sierra and I'd like to install the latest version of iMovie that's compatible with it.

I managed to install iMovie 9.0.9 from Apple's website (that's the latest version they offer) but there's no option to update it? When I click "Check for Updates" from within the app it says that it's already the latest version. I also tried via App Store but I got the following message: "This app cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID". Today I tried App Store again, yet there is no more "Update" option - only "Get". When I try to download it, it will now say that my OS version is not compatible with the latest version of iMovie.

There's obviously an option to download iMovie 10 from certain 3rd party websites but I don't feel comfortable downloading and installing software from unverified sources.

Any ideas?

Also, which video formats are even supported by iMovie 9.0.9? I can't even import .mov or .mp4 files, which is rather disappointing.

Do you have a newer computer or a friend with newer computer and TimeMachine backup? I just went back several months to see which iMovie version would install on Mojave, which in my case was 10.1.14. The process should be similar with High Sierra.

Unfortunately I don't.

Thanks. I've seen these posts but they don't really solve my problem here...

How so? Tells u to download 9, do the thing with right click package contents that'll then give you 10 on download, is that what you're having issue with?
It' similar to how got imovie 6 on Mojave.
Yes: I see no option to install 10 from the package contents. Or better yet, I can't install the latest 10 from the App Store because it says my OS version is incompatible. Nor does my current version appear under Purchased in the App Store.

Have you followed this step by step.
Yes. This is how I got 9.0.9 to work on my MBP in the first place. But when I get to the part where you search for iMovie in the App Store, I only get the option to UPDATE the app, rather than install. And when I click on UPDATE I get the following message: "This app cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID".

Cool, so I'd prob say drag a copy of 9 to a drive / usb stick as back-up, then follow this - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251731354
I'm having the exact same problem as OP.
This solution doesn't work as that involves reinstalling from the app-store, which won't allow as it says a newer version on MacOS is required, which isn't possible as I'm at the most recent for my machine.

Another great example of apple's commitment to planned obselecence. My macbook is working perfectly but if I want to get the appropriate version of imovie with it I have to either reinstall or buy a new one, it seems.

I don't have a copy of high sierra to check on, there's chatter here https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/301762/is-it-possible-to-download-acquire-imovie-10-1-6 , but seems to repeat the links I've quoted. On one reply (May 4th) it says to close app store & re-open, sorry can't help further.

How did you install iMovie 9? I can only find updates, not the application itself. Any advice is well appreciated.
