iMovie and iDVD no sound

Hey, I tried burning an avi file onto a dvd with iDVD, and the video worked fine but there was no sound. This also happens with importing avis and mpgs into iMovie HD (as MPEG-4). I've checked the help, which says check Quicktime's movie info of the mpeg, it may be a muxed mpeg-1. It turns out that my mpg files are "muxed mpeg-1s" but the help doesn't say anything about them!

I had no trouble making dvds from avis and mpgs on windows with nero and power producer. Is there anything I can do to get the sound on there? I want to make some movies :(
