iMovie and my iMac---help!

I am trying to import an MPEG-4 video into iMovie. It's less than 30 minutes long and was taken with a DV camcorder. iMovie is taking FOREVER to import it. I selected to import the video. Now it says "Generating Thumbnails" with an estimated time of 300 minutes. Is this normal? This time seems slightly excessive from other DVD programs I've used.

Thanks for any help you can give.
