Hi, I want to edit a video I took, and it seems iMovie would be the way to go.

I have an early 2014 MBA, running Catalina 10.15.4 with 8 GB. It's hanging in there, but I have to close a lot of things to keep it from getting too close to its 8 GB max.

I found iMovie in the App Store, but it wants ver 10.15.6. I don't want to upgrade, as I am concerned of bloat. I found https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/where-can-i-download-an-older-version-of-imovie.1707276/. That version seems too old.

Does anyone know of a version compatible with 10.15.4 or another good video editing software?

There’s no difference in “bloat” between 10.15.4 and 10.15.7 but you are missing a lot of bug fixes and security improvements. You should update.

ok, i did the update in Sys Pref and learned that Big Sur was downloaded and am at the install screen.

Is that going to slow it down?

If so, how can I upgrade to 10.15.6 or one that is close, with good bug fixes and security improvements?

Just quit that installer, and go back to the Software Update preference pane. There will be some small text about "additional updates are available" or some similar wording. Click on that and you'll see the updates for Catalina.
