Actually, this procedure works on my iPod and I think it's a great way to get movies into the correct format without having to shell out money for QT Pro (but it can be slower). I use it when I want to put my home movies into the iPod format.

Still, ffmpegx is still the best (free) solution out there as it's basically a dozen or so programs in one. Very fast and convenient.

'acquire' as you call it is wrong - it's not alot of money for QT Pro

QT Pro is the simple way but there are alternatives to get things on your iPod
