iMovie help

Hey guys,


I know i'm suppose to know this solution, but i don't. I have a problem with iMovie in that i finished putting together a quick edit of my vacation this summer and I tried to export it into mpeg2.... and a box appears stating "DVD Studio Pro needs to be serialized in order to use Quicktime MPEG encoder"

I completely wiped out DVD Studio Pro 4 along with Final Cut Studio. I removed what i can find in Pro Apps folder and Application Support. But it still does it.

I deleted Quicktime and the two folders in Application support.... i tried to export and it still shows the message. What am i missing to delete? Or how do i get around this dilemma?

Any help would be nice. Thanks

I apologize if I'm not understanding what you're trying to do, but I though that the only way to get QuickTime to export to an MPEG/MPEG2 stream was to have DVDSP installed and registered, which you're saying you specifically removed. Otherwise, it's just not possible.

The only way to get DVD video out of iMovie without it is to open the file in iDVD and let it do the compression--it has an MPEG2 compressor (obviously), but it's not accessible from QuickTime, only from directly within the app.

Makosuke is correct. iMovie and QuickTime (even Pro,) cannot create MPEG-2 files. They can create MPEG-1 or MPEG-4 files, but not MPEG-2. The only way you can do it with 'consumer' software is via iDVD, as Makosuke suggests.

There is a 'QuickTime MPEG-2 component', but it only allows QuickTime to PLAY MPEG-2 files, not encode them. (MPEG-2 has funny licensing terms.)

Hmm...I did have DVD Studio Pro on my machine at one time. A friend of mine installed it on my machine a while back and after we completed a project, I deleted the software because it had a "not for resale" license. But I really deleted it because it (along with the other Final Cut Studio software) was hogging up my 80Gb HD. So i deleted them to free up room.

Now...months later i wanna do an iMovie project and export it to a file that can be read in DVD players... i dunno how. I have iLife 06 and it has a real license since i bought it at the Apple store.... ever since i installed the software... its the only time I've had a problem with iDVD. Instead of trying to export it to Mpeg2.... i created the DVD project in iDVD and then i clicked on burn. It processes through menus....processes through slideshows.....processes through movies...but iDVD hangs at "encoding audio." I check force quit and it says that iDVD is not responding. Now...consider this...

The iDVD project is nearly 8Gb.
The iMovie project came out to 2 hrs 40mins
After iDVD encodes the video (shown via the small video) it goes to encoding audio. The burning icon stops spinning and i don't know what to do.
Is there something wrong with iDVD? Am i not waiting long enough for the encoding audio to happen? Is a 1.6Ghz G5 no longer good enough to work with iDVD from iLife 06?

I'm not sure how long you're waiting, but iDVD takes a VERY long time to encode for burning, and to the OS it appears to be "hung", even though it isn't. Perhaps you should try letting it sit overnight to make sure that there's even a problem to begin with? On longer projects, since it has to do 2-pass encoding, it's not very good at estimating the time, so it can appear "suck" for a VERY long while.

I wasn't aware that iDVD could create DVDs longer than 2 hours, but I haven't experimented much with '06 yet. Also, if you're preparing for a dual-layer DVD (larger than 4.5GB iDVD project), make sure you have both dual-layer media and a dual-layer-compatible burner.

Ok...so I completely wiped out my iLife 06 data on my HD except for iPhoto and iTunes. I took out the support files and everything.

I installed iLife 05...but this time...just iMovie and iDVD..... they both ran... opened my file and sent it to iDVD. iDVD 5 takes the video and I find out it has no support for DL DVD's....so I go back to iMovie and cut my 3 hour movie...down to 1 hour and 30 mins.

I sent it back to iDVD....it takes it. I set up my menus.... i click on burn. I let it run overnight, it encodes the menus, slideshows, and movie...but when it came to encoding the audio.... iDVD stops responding! The blue bar is still showing that ripple effect...but Finder says that iDVD stopped responding.

What's wrong with this thing?! Is this normal? Should i let it run longer? This is another day wasted...
