Is there any way to import old conversations, and sync ones that happen when I'm not at my desk? Would be nice.

Does seem to make the feature almost pointless I guess. The benefit of iMessage is all your messages everywhere so you can follow a conversation across devices. Hopefully it's something they'll look at soon. :)

Edit: so, while at work, the first time I opened iMessage on the iPad i got the prompt asking if want to use my phone to relay SMS. Obviously chose yes. Was not expecting this would work away from home wifi - I have no idea why I wasn't - but I was pleasantly surprised when an SMS came in and it appeared on the iPad, all over cellular. Nice.

Now, question: I left home before enabling the functionality on my iMac but once enabled will these SMS come through to my Mac when I'm away since it seems it's just using iCloud to sync these, or is there still a Bluetooth proximity requirement for it to work?

Once enabled all messages will sync to all devices going forward. Just the historical messages on your phone before enabling will not be synced to your other devices.

No bluetooth needed iMessage does it behind the scene. Your devices just need to be connected to the internet so iMessage can do it's thing.

Good to know. I'd started thinking that might be the case, but I've only enabled it on Mac since I got in from work so not had a chance to see if this is the case yet.

Historical conversations I guess I'm not bothered about.

Bringing over old messages to other devices is one thing I'd really like to see. There are lots of pre-iMessage conversations I would like to keep, just not necessarily on my iphone, because storage is limited there...hopefully that will be a feature in the future. At least SMS messages sync even when devices aren't on the same wifi network...that is nice.

Me too. Would be great to have an archive.
