Hey folks, Newbie here!
Been watching these forums on and off for 6-8 months drooling over the iphone. I REALLY would like to replace my smartphone, but there are a few apps I cannot live without. Are there 3rd party apps available for jailbroken phones that make up for this? I have not seen them listed anywhere as existing, but I am tired of assuming there aren't workarounds. I was holding out until the release of the SDK and what a disappointment that turned out to be. Wait another 6 months? That may be my only option, but let's see if I'm just mistaken here.

Apps I need:

Calendar: I need a calendar with categories, color coding, and syncing with a windows based system. I also need to be able to view it in week and month views. It is my assumption that the standard calendar does not have categories (ie, work, school, family, all color-coded differently for quick glance). Google calendars is an option, but doesn't have week view on mobile devices. I don't want a vertical list, I want to see the whole week laid out in block view.

ToDo: I know there are web based todo's but I would really like a native app. I assume this has been created. Can it sync with anything on a windows PC?

Password program: I have a hundred random passwords and can't remember them all. i just created one more for this forum. Is there a native hack that can handle passwords and is encrypted in case my phone is stolen? I don't want a web based solution. That just sounds stupid. It sounds like a hackers paradise!

Apps I'd like:
I'm not holding my breath for these, but would miss them.

MS Access database: I currently carry around some work databases that I access on a regular basis from home and the road. I don't need constant syncing, but need to keep my data in sync from time to time.

Bible: Web based just doesn't cut it. Too darn slow!

Well, sorry for the book! Am I just wishful thinking until the SDK is really ready (and then another 6 months for proper development!) or are people already enjoying these apps on their jailbroken iphones?

syncing with a windows based system. I also need to be able to view it in week and month views
iphone can do all of that

there is a native to do app, but no syncing back to a pc. hopefully in june though...

im fairly sure there is a password program, but dont know what its called

iphone can do all of that

That would be great news indeed! However, every picture, shot, or review of the iphone I have seen has only shown gray entries in the native calendar without an option to enter a category to save it under. Did this option come along with one of the updates or am I just missing the obvious?

I guess the silence is my answer. . .

no real calendar solutions for the iphone?

I guess I'll keep limping along with my old treo. Disappointing.:(

What disappointment?

I think people didn't write because of your unfair low expectations.

Did you see the SDK presentation? Did you see what people can do in 2 weeks? Official iPhone 2.0 firmware is to release around June and allows the following.

- Calendar: can sync from and back to computer, REAL TIME. Current calendar works fine and syncs fine back to my mac.
- To do: same as above.
- Password app with strong encryption already exists: http://www.iphonehacks.com/2007/10/1passwordiphone.html
- Native Quran apps (at least 2) are available, with different translations in many languages (even multiple translators in English) and spoken audio. As to the bible, since there are many web-based sites, it probably won't take long after iphone 2.0 firmware is released for those to release a native version.

Well, thanks for posting consultant, but you still didn't answer my question about categories and colors on the calendar. philgilder said "iphone can do all of that" but hasn't made it clear that it really can. Endgadget and others and countless early threads on this (and the touch) forum have all complained that you cannot set categories when making appointments on the iphone and all the color setting for categories set in ical do not carry over to the iphone. Of course the calendar syncs both ways but all I've read is that it doesn't handle color coded categories well or categories for events created on the iphone. I would love to be wrong. I would love an iphone, but I cannot sacrifice the things I mentioned in my initial post.

(I have since, on my own, found some 3rd party apps for todo's and possibly passwords, but nothing for the calendar.)

I am not troll, merely a noob looking for help and guidance to which I have not gotten anything concrete. I don't know any iphone users I can ask. I cannot spend $400 on a phone and then hope I can discover some of this on my own. I was hoping the experienced folks around here could help me out.

My disappointment is that I'm apparently stuck with my current phone which can handle my necessities, but has no wifi and a sorry excuse for a browser. Of course there's always WM, but don't even wanna go there!

The calendar doesn't color coordinate (I don't know why they didn't make it match the iCal groups, it is kind of a bummer for me but not a deal breaker) you can view in list, day or month view.
