I have some music on CD that isn't offered digitally, is importing CD's as simple as plugging in one of Apple's CD/DVD drive and import?

Yes I have imported many songs from my old CD's on Big Sur - starting from beta 2 or 3 - no issues - other than the artwork - I think apple only provides artwork for the Music that is sold on the itunes store

Before they also linked to other music data bases for meta data

Most of my music is uploaded from CD's, originally using an Apple internal drive, and now using an external Blu-Ray, DVD, CD drive. Simple.

Getting the artwork is spotty. I'm not sure why. Some is there. Some isn't. Some used to be, and isn't.

One unsolicited suggestion. If storage space isn't a problem, and especially if you are playing to a good sound system, upload uncompressed, or losslessly compressed music. You can put the stuff in smaller formats on your portable devices. Apple lossless has always worked fine for me.

Anyone have a recommendation for an external drive? (I tried my original Apple SuperDrive with a USBC adapter and nothing)

Did you try your SuperDrive on another Mac just to be sure it works ? I guess it should work on the newer machines, even with an USBC adapter.

Storage space is just dirt cheap nowadays, too. It just makes sense to future-proof the files you're doing all this work to digitize -- especially if you end up parting with the physical media later on. I generally use ALAC (Apple Lossless) format myself.
