Hi. I'm after advice on the right way to import an old iphoto library from a previous computer into my new computer's iphoto library. I had a Mac G5. It died, I had backup. I now have an Imac running Mavericks and have already started using Iphoto and importing new images etc. What I haven't done is import my old library, too scared too. From my G5's backup drive, from my where I want to import from, appears the old Iphoto library. The folder is titled 'Iphoto Library 6.0.6'. I am not sure when I import if I should select this folder or one of the subfolders, 'Originals'? Advice greatly appreciated before going ahead on a guess.

Imac, 2010, Mavericks.

The best method by far would have been to copy the old library over to the new Mac from the back and open iPhoto and use the old library. Then AFTER that import new photos as you shoot.

If the old library contains many more photos then I'd do the above. This way all the meta data and tags and captions and edits are persevered. If you have put a lot of work into the library moving in bulk from backup is the best way. Then re-import your new work.

But if there are not so many in the old iPhoto library or if you never added comments and tags and edits then just re-import them as if they were new photos, Select the containing folder and let iPhoto pull them in.

Thanks Chris. The old library does contain far more photos than the new but I've never added comments or tags and the edits I've done have been filed away in a separate folder as copies. I'm quite ok to re-import them as new photos (figuring there is not going to be any crossover of file id's.;I've checked)

I'm thinking to import the old. When you say select the containing folder do you mean selecting the folder 'iPhoto Library 6.0.6' or the folder within, 'Originals'. Want to double-check. Thanks for your reply mate, very helpful.
