I want to import several thousand photos from my Canon 5D to my iPad, but not directly to Photos, because I don't want them all to end up in my iCloud/Photos "All Photos" album. I tried importing them directly to Lightroom - launched it, created a new album, attached the CF card to the iPad, and immediately Photos launches asking me to import the photos to it.

Anyway to avoid that and go directly to Lightroom or another third party iPad photo app?

If you're importing from CF to iPad via the Apple camera connection kit I think the only way to get the images in is to import into Photos app. I don't think any other apps can access the card reader hardware. Maybe in iOS 11, since it allows more access to files? I dunno.

You might look at this fellow's workflow; might work for you: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2191720

Yes, I am plugging a CF to USB 3 card reader into the Apple USB to Lightning adapter. (were I to plug in the camera itself, I would end up using the same Apple adapter.

Thanks for the info. I may end up waiting until I'm back to a place with good WiFi. Right now I am at a place with Cellular only and I don't want to blow away my Cellular Data limit with one huge bunch of photos being uploaded to iCloud by Photos.

This is one of the many reasons why my iPad is now collecting dust on a shelf and I'm using a Surface. I am using a MicroSD in adapter in my 5D3, and can just insert that directly in the Surface and off I go. I realize that didn't answer your question, but there are other ways to do Lightroom on a tablet. Its too bad Apple won't give us a tablet that can run MacOS.

I thought you would be able to using the new files app in iOS 11. That's a bit disappointing if you can't after all of Apples hoopla over it. Not that I would ever use it, I couldn't even imagine trying to edit images on an iPad, I'm too used to the colour accuracy of my monitor and all the screen real-estate to layout Photoshop as I like it.

To be fair, the files app On my iPad option is not ready yet in iOS 11 so maybe it will be possible on full launch?
