Importing video from Camcorder to iMovie?

Hey everyone,

So I'm sitting here trying how to figure out how to transfer video off this camcorder I have to my computer so I can edit the footage. It's my friend's camera so I'm not familiar with it at all. It has a cassette tape in which the video was recorded onto.

The camera also has a USB connector. So I figured my computer would simply recognize that the camera was connected and I could get footage from the camera to the computer that way but it didn't work.

The camera is a Panasonic PV-GS35, for reference. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

This is apple's supported cams. Funny, I had the very same cam many years ago and the old iMovie (imovie 6HD) recognized it. If I remember right, there should be a selection in the menu to go to transfer mode. Read the docs and see. First, have computer on, have imovie on, plug in cam, then find the setting. Since that's DV, it should recognize it. What kind of Mac and what version of iMovie do you have?

The USB connection on a DV cam is only for stills images stored on the internal flash memory or memory card. To transfer the video you need to capture it via a Firewire lead.

I use to use Final Cut Pro for this. You have to play the footage from the camera and record (capture) in the application. Its not simply a drag and drop thing.

If you dont have any software on your Mac ask if friends have then you can export the footage as a quicktime movie and put back into iMovie.

Unless iMovie has this function?
