My previous phone was a basic Nokia, so I have no experience with other smartphones or PDAs. So from that perspective, I have to say I'm extremely pleased with my purchase so far.
The experience of actually using the phone is extremely pleasant. Response to input is absolutely instantaneous. No noticeable delays when selecting anything, scrolling, zooming or the like. (The only slowdown is from pulling data off the network.)
It's not 100% intuitive like operating an iPod - I've had to refer to the usage guide a fair bit. But it all makes sense once you read about it.
I was a ATT customer previously, so activation was a painless process of adding the $20/mo iPhone data plan. I guess I'm lucky that way.
It could use some expanded functionality (plenty of other people have already discussed this), but remember what I was used to using, so what I have now is a great improvement.
The only technical issue I've encountered so far is a sever inability of WiFi to work with my Airport Extreme. Based on what I've read here and what I'm seeing, my theory is that it's an iPhone issue, rather than something with the base station of the encryption password. (When I can't talk over wifi, I can't even get a list of available networks. When I can do that, I can connect to my network but not transfer any data, after which I once again can't list networks. My hope is that this is something Apple will be able to reproduce and issue a software fix for.)
All-in-all, I'm very pleased with my purchase.
