After moving from Windows things I can't do with finder that I need every day. I have workarounds which are so, so slow:

0) I use list view for everything except photos so I can quickly reorder files by recent date or name. This works but is cumbersome in Finder.

1) Right click > new text file.txt

2) Right click > cut > hit backspace to go up a folder > paste

3) backspace to go up a folder (quicker than command+up)

4) right click > other new file of any type

5) Open terminal in this path

6) copy folder path to clipboard

I believe I can script solutions to these but I can't seem to get those working when following guides online.

Related thread. It's been discussed a million times before but all I can find are dual pane filemanagers which are no good as I need to see an app's window to reference where to copy from and where to copy to.

I'm thinking about using HOOK and Trickster.

Number 1 seems unnecessary complicated to me. Why not drag the object into the folder in the path bar?

EDIT: I meant number 2.

Try this XtraFinder it has almost all the options you're looking for above, the only downside is that you need to disable SIP, personally it worth it and it free except for alert each time you login.

Thanks. I didn't know you could do that. In Windows Explore I use: ctrl+x > backspace > ctrl +v and this is very quick though. I can keep my fingers on the keyboard.

Thanks but I don't use dual pane because:

1) Awkward with 3 panes. 3 panes are useful for sorting files into 2 new locations

2) Too much screen real estate use, especially on a laptop. Let's say you're sorting files from a folder into 2 new folders and you're referencing a document to see what to put where. With dual pane you have less flexibility.

Both of these don't really apply to dual screen but I need laptop support.

re: SIP: IMHO this is a big security hole. I'd allow it for just this one app but not the entire system. I'll look into if it's possible to disable SIP just for this one app. edit: I'm on a later BigSur than in the docs so I think it's possible but I'll have to test it out

With Big Sur I think you need to keep SIP disabled, I just discovered that there is a bug with dual pan probably due to the new finder in macOS 11, what you wish to accomplish seems a bit overkill for files management😅, commander Pro is also a nice alternative.

1) There are several apps in the app store which enables this.

2) Cmd+c [copy] > cmd+arrow up > Command+Option+V [move] should do the job.

3) I think if your aim is to stay on keyboard, it's not slower, but a matter of adjusting to a new way of doing it.

4) See answer to 1)

5) Create a Service for this (see recipe here)
