So I saw the great sale Office Depot is having on the Nexus 7 so on complete impulse I picked up the 32GB version (the 16 was sold out) for $229. I have been using it for only a few minutes so far, but I wanted to get some suggestions from you all regarding accessories and Android tablet apps that I should try. I am a Nexus 4 user and I have an iPad 2 that I enjoy, but my daughter has taken control of the iPad so I needed something of my own :D .

I am not a gamer and I don't really care for bulky cases. I like the smart cover on the iPad. My use cases on the iPad are general media consumption, photo editing, video editing and music creation. I realize that there is probably nothing in Android that will compete with GarageBand on the iPad, but are there any hidden gems out there I should check out on the Nexus 7? I do use Google Play Music All Access, but what else is a good experience on this device? Anyone else who has "migrated" from a full size iPad to a Nexus 7 have anything to share from your experience?

I mainly use my Nexus 7 for games so I can't really help you in that department.

But in relation to a case, I recommend this case. The case itself is really good for the price, but the best part is the support. I got one right after getting my Nexus 7 and they were actually going through revisions on the case (adjusting magnet position, magnet quantity, etc.). One day I get a big envelope in the mail saying "Thanks for being a valued customer. We just came out with a new version of the case and wanted to send you a new one." I never had to contact them or pay anything extra. Out of nowhere they just sent me a free case. So when they say there is a 3 year warranty on the case, you can trust it. Also, I don't think it adds too much bulk to the Nexus 7.

Thanks! This case looks good and the price seems good as well. I may order it. This is exactly the type of reply I was looking for.

I bought a 32gb Nexus 7 from Staples at Thanksgiving and have been pleased with it so far. I previously came from an Ipad 3 that I sold in anticipation of the Air. I then decided to pass on the Air and ended up with the Nexus 7 after suffering tablet withdrawals.

I definitely recommend the Poetic Slimline case. It's a great buy for the money.

As far as apps, I'm not much of a gamer but instead have news, media, and a few commerce apps. For news, I have all apps that are major: CNN, Fox, Flipboard, AP, USA Today, etc.

For commerce: Ebay, Amazon, Paypal, CraigsPro, Best Buy, etc.

For Media: MX Player is a good free player that can play most Codecs; BeyondPod for podcasts

For utilities and productivity: Dropbox, Evernote, File Manager (a file app is a great utility on Android), and Clean Master (use sparingly).

I have unlocked the device and put on a custom recovery. Both CWM and TWRP will allow you to make a backup images of the device and do many other things. I made a pristine image and then moved it over to my computer. I can also keep a copy on my tablet if desired.

If you decide to root your device, then the extent you wish to customize is up to you. For a couple of good forums, check out XDA-Developers and AndroidCentral.

Impulse Bought a Nexus 7 Today

I also impulsively picked up one of the 16gb Office Depot specials and I tend to find myself not really using the Nexus 7 because it's like unfamiliar territory for me. Besides the occasional web browsing, I use it for a couple of games, namely Bard's Tale and Madden 25 and also watch a bit of Starz play but that's about it. Any other suggestions would also be greatly appreciated.
