I have no need for another machine at this point. I recently got a PM G4 for very cheap and so my desktop needs are well satiated, but then I got an opportunity for another desktop. A friend of mine is trying to supplement a recent laptop purchase by selling her iMac G3 500MHz, Indigo, that she previously only used for web surfing (she had another laptop that was the regular worker).

It is likely that I am the only person she knows who would purchase it. And my decision to purchase it would be primarily based on my appreciation for the machine as an aesthetic piece, and not for legitimate use. I'd likely clean up the case a bit (note, the exterior case is in prime condition; also included will be the original pro keyboard and optical mouse) and then use it for the occasion surfing or heating of the apartment. (Hey, I know it's convection cooled, but a CRT is a CRT and they produce heat; I'd like to take advantage of that if possible :) ).

So, if I could get it for ~$80 I might take it off her hands (she is also graduating this semester and wouldn't want to haul it around with her). But should I really buy it? I know some of you are the obsessive Mac procurers and have mini-storage locations full of Quadras or Classics (come on, admit it), but will this purchase start me down the ultra geeky path?

Anyways, I'd like to know the opinions of my trusted friends here as to whether I should take my first impulsive Mac buy. iMac G3 specs: 500MHz, 360ish MB RAM, 20GB, CD-RW, and I have disks for Tiger. Thanks for the pressuring and/or supporting my restraint.

That's a very cheap and capable little Mac. If you can afford it and some extra RAM it's Tiger ready. You'd need to use Target Disk mode or an external FireWire DVD-ROM/RW to install it though.

I love collecting old machines too. I'm in the market for a clam shell iBook.

that's a great buy,

it will be a great cheap computer, it definitally is worth 80.00,and another computer that's not going to make you a geek, my parents have 5 cars does that make them an automobile geek, NO, they just got great buys on all of them.

TAKE THE IMAC!

Lol, its the good old Apple addiction that seems very easy to catch!! I myself now own a total of 5 macs, each one was a 'bargain buy' apart from my latest purchase of a Mac Mini Core Duo!!

Macs I've bought:
Pre-G3 PowerMac (bargain impulse buy)
iMac G3 333 (bargain(ish) impulse ebay buy)
Faulty G3 iBook (bargain impulse ebay buy with only a very slight and easily fixable fault)
eMac G4 Logic Board (turned into a headless eMac with better specs than a basic G4 mac mini - impulse buy too)

All bargains and all very much impulse buys. Crazy!!

Edit: Ooh, I just realised this was my 500th post! Yay!
