in a bit of a pickle with 3 iphone 3gs

so my little sister and brother are heading off to college this weekend...i thought after all their hard work and getting full scholarship into Yale, and BU i would reward them with something. So i bought 3 iphone 3gs, 1 for me, 1 for each of them.

turns out the 3g in my area is non existent, so i'm on edge and not 3g and that's if i'm lucky i'll get edge. So i call up to att and are asking them to switch my imei number and change it to my old phone lg incite and cxl the data plan, they said they can't do that until next month, so it looks like i'ma be stuck with a data plan that i'm not even gonna get to use most of the time...

i mean i know i'm a new customer and everything, but if this is how they are then i don't think i want to be with them, i rather go back to tmobile or even give verizon a try.

since i can't return the phone without taking a restocking fee...(bought from apple, since local att store didn't have any)...can i cancel one line? without getting hit with ETF?

ATT said i had signal in my area...but i rarely get 1 bar inside the house. So i'm not happy with that.
 
doubt it would matter, but yes i bought 3gs, i wanted to spoil them a bit since i was so proud that they achieved something so wonderful...they knew the family couldn't take care of college tuition like their friends so they busted their butts in highschool to score scholarships...i thought a 3gs would be the least i could spoil them with.

so any advice?
 
Call Att, tell them u damaged ur iphone, cook up a story, before u call switch the sim in your LG. Sell ur Phone on Ebay for a profit, pay the ETF if u are beyond the 30 day period and switch to whatever service u like.... :)
 
i don't care for selling the phone...the thing that ticked me off is i even offered to take the iphone back to the store to exchange to see if i indeed get a dud one but her response was they won't take the data plan off even if its for like 1 week while i use my lg incite since i know that works well and i need it for these next couple of weeks,

basically the customer service was non existent, the rep didn't even bother say anything along the lines of, 'well, let us look into it and give u a call back, or let us try something on our end'. FLAT OUT refused, i mean damn i just activated 3 iphones with data...shouldn't i be a valued customer? I just want to cancel my line and keep the other 2 for my brother and sister.

and 30 days isn't even up yet, not even 14 days, so i am in the clear as far as ETF is concerned?
 
Who ever is going to BU will enjoy fast 3G off campus and very good wifi on campus.
I am a huge fan of their Hockey program
 
OP, you have nothing to worry about. First, I would give ATT another call and get a different rep. In my experience, most are helpful but you do get the occasional idiots. Bottom line, you have 30 days to try out the phone and service, if you still don't like it, just return it and pay what you used with no ETF. Heck, ask them to give you a femtocell to boost your signal.
 
Switch the sim into your LG and then call them up and tell them to take the data plan off. If the rep says no, keep calling in until one says yes. Make sure to switch your sim and then call.

Congratulations to your brother and sister on there hard work. The 3G S is a nice gift you should all be able to enjoy. I would either go to the store talk to the manager or get another rep on the phone. Give them a short version of the story just like you did us. I think you will find someone able and willing to help you at least I hope so. I think if they know why you want to do something they are more likely to help. if you call CS you might have to work though a few CS personal to get somebody that can help. just the way it is sometimes. great replies thanks guys i will definitely do that, I am free monday so i'll probably do that.

the thing that gets me is the rep makes it seem like i'm buying 3 iphone and wanting to cxl so i can sell the phones, when i said from the get go i just want to cxl data on mine or have them help me get the 3g speed i'm looking for.
