CHART OF THE DAY: In Case You Had Any Doubts About Where Microsoft's Profit Comes From

Microsoft is the largest, most profitable software company in the world.

And its profits are still being generated by the same engines that have driven Microsoft for years: Office, Windows, and its server division. (Meanwhile, its entertainment and devices division is only recently profitable again, and its online division is a money pit.)

This is why Google is increasingly focusing on disrupting Microsoft's core businesses, including its Google Docs rival to Office; its Chrome OS rival to Windows; and now Google Buzz, an add-on to Gmail that some have compared most closely to Sharepoint, one of Microsoft's enterprise tools.

And bears still **** in the woods. What's your point? Or is it the same one you make in virtually every thread you start?

I think LTD likes us all to know he reads the news. Wait, I think he likes us to think he reads the news. instead, he pulls headlines from online papers and posts them here lending absolutely no personal commentary to the masses. Likely because it is hard to talk about what you don't understand.

In other news, major organizations have yet to jump on board with Open Office and still use the MS Office Suite.

is this an area plot (which will make office twice as profit as windows) or a stacked area plot (which will make office as profit as windows)?

I think it's the latter, but I find it confusing. Microsoft's profit in the quarter ending Dec 2009 was around $6.7B, so if this is reporting quarterly operating profit, I dont' understand how it can be right either way. If it's reporting annualized profit, then it would seem to have to be the former, although that doesn't look quite right, either..

I know the city of Los Angeles is moving all of it's documents to google docs as we speak away from MS Office. I am looking for the story now. I read it in one of my monthly LA County Magazine.

Here is one link:

And was that graph made with Excel or something else?

I work in Office most of the day, (as, obviously, many people do) and curse it often. But there aren't many competitors that come close.

Oh, I'd prefer to use something else, but most companies that have budgets and network policies and set templates for these things prefer Office.

Err... correct me if I'm wrong but is this not a mac forum? If I cared about what Microsoft does, I would also join a Microsoft forum.

It's *LTD*, for some reason he's obsessed with Microsoft and tries to post at least one new thread about them every day.

It's not just Microsoft. It's any company that may compete with Apple including

Google
RIMM
Nokia
Pretty much any tech company

I think that it's just dividing the percent earned by each product over the total (top of the graph) to get the individual colors, and then stacking them kind of arbitrarily.

The programmes of the Two Minute Hate varies from day to day, but there are few in which Microsoft is not the principal boogeyman. Because as every good Party member knows, all subsequent crimes against the Party, all treacheries, acts of sabotage, heresies, deviations, sprang directly out of the teachings of Bill Gates and Microsoft.

A literary Microsoft fanboi. Now I have seen everything. This side of Microsoft fanaticism, however, is beginning to take on onerous tones. For all of Microsoft's troubles (and they are legion), it is the largest software developer on the planet. Its customer base is still the vast majority of all computer users. The flip-side of this situation is that Microsoft's competition is small. Without the threat of sanctions by governments in the US and EU, there may very well be no commercial competitors for Microsoft.

In this context, it is very dangerous to cast Microsoft in the role of victim to an oppressive hoard of Microsoft bashers. We have seen this behavior before albeit in a different place and time dealing with different issues. However, it did not turn out well.

Equating Apple to Orwell's literary allusions to the British Labour Party of his time doesn't make much sense when Micro$oft is the IBM of our time.

Everyone's got an ideology of some kind, but it all comes down to who bakes the best cookies. They happen be Apple-flavoured.

Apple, Industry and Internet Discussion. ;)

You repeat this again and again and again.

It doesn't in any way explain, justify or give cause for you to post every piece of news about any competing company every single day.

All it does is mean that the location of this thread should be in this sub forum.

WHY do you post them? For what purpose? Anyone who gives a damn about the news you spam this place with will have seen it via various IT news websites or RSS feeds anyway.

What is your motivation in spamming this place with, essentially, any and all news that paints any non Apple firm in anything other than a perfect way?

Yes.... but guess what this forum is called.

MAC RUMORS

This topic is about the Apple Industry and Internet. I don't think Microsoft's profits have anything to say about Apple.

Why do you insist on constantly try and discuss about Microsoft? It almost seems as though you are trying to start a flame war. Get a blog.

The "Apple industry"?

You're reading it wrong:

Apple, (comma) Industry, and Internet.

"Industry" means industry. That's Apple plus everyone else. Not the "Apple Industry", unless a) Apple suddenly grew into an entirely separate industrial sector, or b) you're referring to the kind that grows on trees.

^^ Apple, industry and internet discussion in the MAC RUMOURS forums!!! Anything to do with Apple! I fail to see how posting Microsoft's profits has ANYTHING to do with Apple or any rumours to do with macs.
