If that was a cell phone, and not just a 'designer home phone', then it would actually have been reasonably small for 1982. Back then, most cell phones were suitcase affairs. The Motorola 'brick' cell phone didn't even come out until 1984.

(The linked article calls it "the first cell phone", but that's disingenuous. It was the first hand-held cell phone. There were cell phones before that, but they were the aforementioned 'suitcase' style phones, or car phones.)

That's funny! Nice retro look. Kinda like those Lips Phones.

When I was a kid in the 80's, we had a football-shaped phone that looked very similar in design. It was free with a subscription to Sports Illustrated, if I remember correctly. Maybe (hopefully) Apple was exploring this idea as a promotional item.

My only recollections of the football phone was that it easily broke and hung up on people, so let's hope Apple has come a long way in quality! :p

I think the first thing Steve Jobs & Woz created was some sort of device that let you call long distance for free. Perhaps something actually did come of this... I'll look it up.

Edit: Yup, they called them Blue boxes, but I guess they were illegal, so I'm guessing the phone is something else.

Not a cell phone

Back in 1982...there were very few cell phones in general use, and only one potential cell carrier (The Bell System.) So I very much doubt that this was meant to be a cellular phone. Probably a novelty desk phone, like the R2-D2 phone, or the Duck phone.

Back in the 80's, having a phone that didn't look like the Standard Dial Phone was a big deal.

i would imagine that that would be the case, nobody would really buy it for a serious cell phone.
