Will I get into trouble if I use the @ symbol in a directory name?

I am running macOS Sierra, and it lets me do this, but am wondering if it could cause issues with my application?

To organize things, I would like to change the directory name where Thunderbird stores a given email "account" to match the actual email name.

For example: texas_toast@gmail.com

Is there any real concern doing that?

I don't think the Mac finder has a problem with using the "@" character in file or folder names.

Based on my research, the only character you cannot use in directory names is a colon ( : )

But, I was more concerned about Thunderbird.

When ahead last night, and created directories named after each email address in my new profile and it seems to work just fine. Of course that is not to say that other applications would play so nicely with a folder name like: "texas_toast@mail.com"
