Okay, I figured this thing out. When you signed up for a new @me.com email, you actually created a NEW AppleID. As such, you also added the @me.com address as an email associated with the newly created AppleID.
Go into settings (both FaceTime & iMessage), and you'll notice the main AppleID name at the top (this is not your @me.com AppleID). Tap on this AppleID and then click "sign out"
Now log back into the same spot using your new AppleID (@me.com). Once you do this, it will then list all the emails associated with it. In most cases, you probably only have the 1 @me.com address. Click next and BAM!!! Problem solved.
This works for iMessage & FaceTime.
The problem is your old AppleID (for iTunes purchases) is completely different the. The @me.com AppleID. Therefore, you can't use one AppleID and expect to use the others email address.
Let me know if this works for anyone with similar problems!
