In what way is 256-bit AES encryption more slower than 128-bit AES encryption for images?

I am creating a sparse bundle disk image with encryption, but the options are telling me that 128-bit AES encryption is recommended, and 256-bit AES encryption is more secure but slower.

In what way is this slower?

Why wouldn't you try it? Create a new test one with that encryption and give it a try
