Inclusion of 10w charger—last minute necessity?

I ask this because you can buy the exact same charger separate for $29 from Apple, the only difference being the addition of a long power cord.

you think maybe Apple only included the 10w charger because of the issues with charging under USB for so many computers?

Not a big deal, just wondering.
 
Not "last minute". iPad has been in development for a while. They have "high power" USB ports in current iMacs and MacBooks, released months (or even a year?) ago.

The 10W charger is in the box (making it much bigger, BTW) because they know not everyone has such a computer. And yeah, you might want an extra one or two if you use your iPad in more than one place.
 
I imagine they included that charger out of common decency, and sell nicer ones for those who want a spare or want a longer cord.

Well, they were certainly stupid enough to make quite a few other mistakes in the past, or do you see Apple as having always released perfect products?

BTW, way to try and kill a thread at MR, Mark.

When the iPhone was released many were still on USB 1.0 and charging did not work so well with USB 1.0...did Apple include a 10w charger? No they did not...

and, I read the sentence again...I think this is still a valid question...

(Oh, and Mark, you need not reply again if it will insult your intelligence.)
 
They include AC adapters with iPhones and iPods and you can buy them separately too. Why would the iPad be different?

I guarantee they knew the battery needed more power long before shipping if that's your question.

really? I do not remember getting one with any of the 3 different iPod Touches in my house...



I know "they" (apple) knew it needed more power, my question is did they originally plan in including a 10w charger.

What if, the iPad DID NOT have charting issues with so many computers....would there still be a 10W charger?

No charger for iPod Touch...a $ 399.00 purchase (potentially)....no charger for the iPhone (roughly $600-$700 if purchased unlocked).....

just saying.

and all you snarks...read my sig...I do actually own a few Apple products, including the iPad

Three things.

1. You mean USB 1.1.
2. USB 2.0 has been out for literally a decade, and almost every computer sold after 2002 has USB 2.0 ports, so the iPhone's 2007 release was not ahead of the times.
3. There is no difference in specified output power between USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 (500mA).

The iPhone is perfectly happy on the 5W charger it came with.

I just looked and the iPhone comes with it, but the Touch doesn't. We've got about 6 of them here so I figured they all came with it.

I did notice the iPad manual does specifically say to charge it with the 10w charger and sync with the USB cable.

All of my iPhones came with a charger.

Because the ability to charge a phone is critical to its operation. On a Touch, nothing is critical. It's an entertainment device. They include one with the iPad for psychological reasons. Marketing has probably determined that $500 is the cutoff price for making a charger a requisite.

Now you're just being silly. There is no phone in the iPad. Just because something comes with a charger does not make it a phone. Did I really just type that?
 
and now you are being silly because an iPad is closer to an ipod touch than an iPhone...poor logic.
 
I think having to plug it in with the 10w charger is a small price to pay for battery life that outperforms anything else currently available, tablet, netbook, or laptop.

most of you are misunderstanding me. I am not looking to bash heads with the extreme Apple supporters...only obtain some info

maybe it is because they had to include the unexpected cost of supplying everyone with a 10w charger, when they would have liked to do it the new Apple way, which is on the cheap...as you said

They were certainly stupid enough to release the product without a very clear statement saying "hey, your standard USB port may not be sufficient for charging this thing, fyi".

Just asking for some communication skills - Apple's lacking this. Learn to communicate with your customer who's handing you their hard earned cash. It's the least a company can do.

It's just a big iPod touch! har har.

Actually my friend who got one in recently has been retorting back exactly with that statement: You know what? It IS a big iPod Touch - and it's awesome.
 
The USB cable is painfully short. I think I'll swap it with the one that came with my iPod touch. As for the brick, I never got one with any of my iPods.
