Well, they were certainly stupid enough to make quite a few other mistakes in the past, or do you see Apple as having always released perfect products?

BTW, way to try and kill a thread at MR, Mark.

When the iPhone was released many were still on USB 1.0 and charging did not work so well with USB 1.0...did Apple include a 10w charger? No they did not...

and, I read the sentence again...I think this is still a valid question...

(Oh, and Mark, you need not reply again if it will insult your intelligence.)

My iPhone 1.0 did in fact include a charger, not sure what planet you purchased yours on.

They include AC adapters with iPhones and iPods and you can buy them separately too. Why would the iPad be different.

Yeah. What he said.

Are you (OP) really saying, "There's a charger in the box, must be a last-minute panic decision"? There is not much reason to conjecture that. iPhone came with a charger. MacBooks come with a charger. My beloved old iPod Nano didn't, but the iPad ain't no Nano.

maybe it is because they had to include the unexpected cost of supplying everyone with a 10w charger, when they would have liked to do it the new Apple way, which is on the cheap...as you said
It's not an unexpected cost. The iPad was going to ship with a charger either way, and they easily knew ahead of time the ballpark battery capacity they'd be talking about and the impossibility of charging and running off USB, an interface never designed to support high-load devices like this.

iPods stopped coming with AC chargers several rounds of price drops ago, because their small batteries easily charge while syncing, market research suggested that AC adapters weren't used all that often, and most people aren't far from a USB port for long. iPhones and iPads are used for independent work and travel, so it's much more likely that just a power outlet would be available.
They were certainly stupid enough to release the product without a very clear statement saying "hey, your standard USB port may not be sufficient for charging this thing, fyi".
Your standard USB port is sufficient for charging this thing. What it may not be is sufficient for charging while operating. A KB article is more than adequate for such a minor issue.

So basicly your only apple Prodoct is iPods?

I'm pretty sure every apple prodoct besides iPods have chargers. And the ipas isn't a iPod

and now you are being silly because an iPad is closer to an ipod touch than an iPhone...poor logic.

Here's the logic... Apple included a charger with the iPad BECAUSE THE ENGINEERS KNEW THE CUSTOMER WOULD NEED ONE! For the iPad, the charger really isn't an optional item. It charges too slowly via a computer's USB port.

Thus underlining the silliness of your original question.

Mark

the original iPods came with the same 10w chargers. Which is good since I still have one. They were able to get them down to 5w chargers which is nice to have the small form factor for those. I believe that they were always going to have the 10w charger included. The iPad falls into a new device category, so they should have their own charger. Plus they are going for a broader market, that may not own any of the other products let alone have the latest and greatest computer with which to charge said device. So it is one, smart marketing and two, good customer relations to include a charger with it.

The original iPod chargers were 5W, not 10W. They just have the same form factor as the current 10W charger, is all.

really? I do not remember getting one with any of the 3 different iPod Touches in my house...

I know "they" (apple) knew it needed more power, my question is did they originally plan in including a 10w charger.

What if, the iPad DID NOT have charting issues with so many computers....would there still be a 10W charger?

No charger for iPod Touch...a $ 399.00 purchase (potentially)....no charger for the iPhone (roughly $600-$700 if purchased unlocked).....

just saying.

and all you snarks...read my sig...I do actually own a few Apple products, including the iPad

I've owned the following apple iPod/iPhone devices, and below is a breakdown of their included accessories:

iPod 5GB Generation 1: firewire only, mechanical scroll wheel, black & white screen, came with headphones, firewire cable, power adapter
iPod 30GB Generation 5: headphones, usb to dock cable
iPod Mini 4GB Generation 1: usb to dock cable, headphones
iPod nano 8GB Generation 3: usb to dock cable, headphones
iPod nano 8GB Generation 4: usb to dock cable, headphones
iPhone 8GB Generation 1: power adapter, headphones with microphone, usb to dock cable
iPhone 8GB 3G Generation 2 (post 3GS release): power adapter, headphones with microphone, usb to dock cable

I'd expect the iPad, with it's higher power requirement, came with a charger as a primary thought, certainly not as an after thought

also, I don't know of an iPhone that doesn't come with a 5W wall power adapter. they're the nifty little cube bricks now instead of the huge things they used to be.

If they were 1A, but I don't think they were. Unfortunately I can't find mine to check. In any case, they won't work with iPhones or iPads, so it's hardly relevant.

They were.

You are wrong - again.

Since you want to argue, like a pic?

It's a shame I had to peel the plastic on this gem.

Thanks for the info. In any case, kind of irrelevant since I was talking about USB power adapters, not FireWire ones.

I guess the really old iPods must have had big batteries.

I just wish they would cleary state what the wattage is or at least make them look differant from each other. I couldn't figure out why my iPad was taking forever to charge until i found out my daughter picked up the 10watt and dropped her 5 watt by the wall.

anybody know what would happen if i plug the iPad charger into an iPhone 3Gs?

will it blow the battery? charge it quicker? what?
