I am experiencing inconsistent iMessage notifications when my iPhone is near my iMac and my iMac is connected to a VPN.
I get no notifications at all, neither on the iPhone, nor on the iMac, of any kind - no sound, no banners.
If I disconnect the VPN, all is back to normal.
Anyone knows the reason?

Idk but I almost use VPN 24/7. No such issue. I don't have notifications but I can receive iMessage from my Mac and iPhone.

The VPN I use is Cisco AnyConnect that has been setup by my employer. Could it be something in the profile/settings?

Edit: in the settings, there is a checkbox "Allow Local LAN Access" and it is checked.

It sounds like all of your internet traffic is being sent over the VPN which probably has the ports needed by iMessage blocked. What you're looking for is called split-tunnel where it uses your internet connection instead of sending everything over the VPN. Here's the best article I could find on this: https://documentation.meraki.com/MX-Z/Client_VPN/Configuring_Split-tunnel_Client_VPN

I'd probably recommend that you work with your employer's IT department to assist you on this. They might even be able to push out a configuration change to enable this for you.

Update: if I turn off bluetooth on the iPhone while iMac is connected to VPN, I get every notification on the iPhone. I still get none on the iMac.

Opinons why this may be, and how to overcome it?

Have you contacted your VPN administrator?

Again, this sounds like all traffic is being routed through the VPN. As @Shirasaki posted, I'd also recommend contacting your VPN administrator. They can see what is being blocked by the firewall/vpn.

Bump.

Any ideas why bluetooth [set to on] on the iPhone is preventing iMessage notification on the iPhone itself?
Are you using Continuity by any chance? That requires both the iPhone and Mac to be connected to the same WiFi network with Bluetooth enabled. Because just having Bluetooth enabled should not prevent notifications from being displayed on the iPhone itself. Also, if everything is working fine when the VPN is not connected, then it's an issue with the VPN and not with the iMac or the iPhone.

Tanks to all who replied. I do not have an option to contact the VPN administrator, as they will not tailor anything specifically for me (it is a very large company).

Yes, I am using continuity. I will accept the fact that VPN is the problem, and I will turn off bluetooth when iMac is on VPN.

Don't give up yet!

I'm actually having very similar issues as you've listed. My issue isn't with a VPN (because I'm a little ignorant and don't know what it is or how to use it). From IP checks, what I do know is that I'm not protected by a VPN.

The problem started when macOS Sierra was released. Ever since Apple pushed for better continuity, especially with iOS10 and mac OS Sierra. In one keynote event, they mentioned something about how annoying the notifications were on multiple devices when receiving phone calls or messages. I haven't been able to find which event this issue addressed specifically. I just remember a roar from the crowd.

Here's my issue: I own an iPhone 7, Apple Watch S2, MacBook 2015 12in, and iPad Air which are all running the latest software (iOS 10 and Sierra). I do not have iMessage notifications or sounds enabled on my Mac or iPad, however all devices are logged into the same iCloud and sync without a problem. For privacy I only like for my messages to come through my iPhone or Apple Watch. My iPad has no problem complying, but the MacBook takes issue. When my MacBook is logged in, nearly all iMessages notifications on my iPhone and Apple Watch fail "notify" me.

Here's what works: Disable bluetooth on my Mac.

This isn't an ideal solution. I use my Apple Watch to unlock my MacBook and at times use the instant hotspot feature on my iPhone and iPad. I've searched everywhere for the solution. Google search comes up with out-dated information, Apple.com over simplifies the issue, and Apple Support may as well think I'm someone asking their grandkid why the "email machine" won't "wif-ee".

Here's another crazy solution that seems to work. SMS notifications broken?

@Justim - thanks!
VPN - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network
Thanks for the link. I do understand their desire to send the notification to the most recent active device. However, when I am connected to VPN on my iMac, and working on it, it is the most recent device. In this case, the sound notifications are delivered nowhere. Only if I unlock my iPhone will I see banners that I have received iMessages.
