"Incorrect firmware selected" message from Pwnagetool 3.1.5?

A friend of mine is using an unlocked iPhone 3G and asked me to update her iPhone software to the newest version. The phone is currently running 3.0.1.

So I grabbed Pwnagetool and downloaded the 3.1.3 IPSW file. Connected her iPhone, started up Pwnagetool and when I got to the step asking for the IPSW, I selected the 3.1.3 file and then got a message from Pwnagetool saying "incorrect firmware selected" or something along those lines. Thinking that it might have to do with the file I downloaded, I grabbed a 3.1.2 IPSW (got them all from iclarified.com). I repeated the process--and got the same result. What's up with this? What's incorrect about the IPSW's I tried?

Either you are trying to use the wrong firmware, or you are clicking the wrong device in PT. What kind of phone do you have, and what is the complete exact name of the ipsw you are trying to use? Also, which device image are you clicking in PT?

The phone is an iPhone 3G, not 3GS. The IPSWs I grabbed from here: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750, so I suppose the full filenames are the following:

iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw and iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw

I clicked the device image on the far left.

There's your problem. You need the one on the far right. You clicked on the 2G.

Also: why do you just "suppose" those were the file names? Can't you just look at the actual files? You will find that, when jailbreaking, precision is key and supposition just doesn't cut it.

I don't mean to be funny or anything, but where is "far right" when you have a list of items, like so?

3.1.0 (2G): iPhone1,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw
3.1.0 (3G): iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw
3.1.0 (3GS): iPhone2,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw
3.1.2 (2G): iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw
3.1.2 (3G): iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw
3.1.2 (3GS): iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw
3.1.3 (2G): iPhone1,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw
3.1.3 (3G): iPhone1,2_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw
3.1.3 (3GS): iPhone2,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw

And you're right. I should have clarified. The reason I said "suppose" is that I was using the friend's Macbook to try to update her phone. I'm at home now on my own Macbook Pro. I downloaded the ISPWs and attempted all this when I was over at her place last.

I was pretty damn sure I picked the files that said (3G) in parentheses, which is why I was confused that PT would tell me "incorrect firmware files". Naturally, I actually may have grabbed the wrong ISPWs, though. I also couldn't believe that there could be something wrong with the ISPWs on iclarified's site. I still don't.

If you clicked on that image, then you clicked on the wrong image. You need to click on the image at the far right. Yes, it is an image of a 3GS, but that's the one you need to click on. The one at the far left is for the original iPhone, also called the 2G. The one in the middle is for the iPod Touch. The one on the right is for the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Gotcha! Huge misunderstanding on that first part. Thanks for clearing this up. So much for "precision is key" when it comes to the jailbreaking business though... at least as far as Pwnagetool is concerned, that goes straight out the window.

I *never* would have thought to select the 3GS image to jailbreak a 3G. What I thought was that the far left image was for iPhone 3G's and 2G's and that the far right one's reserved for the 3GS!

Well, now I know. Thanks!

I downloaded the ipsw files using Safari and was getting that error message earlier tonight. I re-downloaded using a different browser and that corrected that error message....

Yup.. that's another problem I've also already run into in the past. Is it possible that Apple intentionally included code in Safari to sabotage IPSW file downloads? The claim is a bit too conspiracy-ish for my own taste, but who knows?

I had even done that same thing you just described before starting this thread because I thought that may have been the culprit. It was not. I redownloaded with Firefox and was still getting the errror messages, but then we now know what the problem was in my case.
