Interesting and indepth review of Ubuntu 10.04 over at Ars

The author is the developer of gwibber and being such he does spend a lot of time talking about his app, but if you know Ars, you know they do some seriously indepth reviews.

It seems the author struggled to find stuff to write about on 10.04, so he spends a lot of time with the UI changes, which is ok, since this probably the biggest change to Ubuntu 10.04 anyways.

I'm not a geek so I don't really know what has change under the hood but so far on my iMac, 10.04 is pretty good.

Very easy install along side OSX.

I did have a problem with wifi initially, needed to dig out my old ethernet cable to download the broadcomm drivers to get the wireless to work.

The UI is very similar to OSX but as usual ubuntu, like other distros, is very customisable so you can end up with something very different if you like.

I didn't like the default Appearance settings so I changed mine to Clearlooks. Installing Ubuntu is painless and the added bonus is the ability to browse the web and use your computer while the OS installs. Certainly makes waiting ten minutes or so less painful. The Ubuntu Software Center looks polished. In 9.10 it looked pretty dull. I still use the Terminal and if I have to, Synaptic to grab apps or extra plugins. Software Center is nifty because you can browse and see all the apps. Many of which I've never heard of. Still can't install multiple apps at the same time, though.

That's the thing that many users fail to realize, perhaps because they're coming from Macs where you cannot change the themes easily or windows where many people don't either (though you can in windows).

They've been trying to get away from apt-get for a number of years though I still prefer that method - I like the using the terminal, but that's the geek in me

You generally cannot do this in windows either, and I personally don't do this in OSX. I only single task installations to avoid issues down the road. For example, adobe products wants to make sure safari/firefox is closed and is doing a lot of stuff. I'd hate to mess up that installation trying to install another app at the exact same time.
