I have a 20 page InDesign CS3 file that I have spent many hours working on, but have run into a sickening problem. After finishing the document on Wednesday, I tried opening it this morning (Friday) to print .ps files and send them to the printer, as deadline is today. Unfortunately, when I attempt to open the file, I get an error message saying:

"Cannot open "xxxxxxxxx.indd".
The file "xxxxxxxxx.indd" is damaged and cannot be recovered (Error code: 5)."

I've tried calling Adobe Customer Support, but the woman (while friendly) simply told me "Yeeeeeeeaah, that's not good." She suggested updating InDesign to 5.0.4 and Mac OSX to 10.5.4--both of which I had already done. She then told me that she hopes my day gets better and we hung up. Since then, I've also tried resetting the InDesign preferences, moving the linked files in an attempt to reduce file size, renaming the file, zipping and unzipping the file, opening the file as a copy, opening it in CS2, opening it on a coworker's machine, and a few others. None of these were successful, and I receive the same error message everytime. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the file size, as it was a very photo-intensive project with dozens of high res TIFF files--around 2GB worth.

As much as I wish that I had saved a second copy while working, I simply didn't even think about it. I'm always using CTRL+S while I work, but that didn't do me any good this time.

I'm feeling pretty hopeless at this point in time, but figured I would post here just in case anyone out there can save my day, and my project.

Indesign CS2 error messages

We create ads for a newspaper. We use CS2 Indesign and today we are having major trouble. EVERY department is unable to create pages, ads, etc. without receiving an Indesign error message:

1. Could not complete your request because of a database error. The file xxxxxx.indd is damaged (Error Code: 2).
2. A serious error has occured. Indesign will now shut down (This happened when creating a new ad).
3. Cannot save xxxxx.indd. xxxxx.indd is damaged (Error Code 2).

We thought our template pages were damaged, so we created new page templates. We are still receiving errors.

have you tried opening up the indesign file in acrobat proffesional? (u could download a trial of it for free from adobe's site). Sometimes when files don't want to open either in illustrator or indesign, i open them in acrobat and they do open. then, you could just save it as a pdf and send it to be printed.

also, sometimes adobe support is better through their online customer support portal, however it takes 24 hours + for them to respond.

good luck
