InDesign: File Display preferences

Hello all.

I have InDesign files containing links to Illustrator and Photoshop files in them. By default, these images are rendered very poorly in InDesign, and I would like to fix that. Now I know what you're all thinking; "Just go to Edit > Preferences > Display Performance" Only it's not that simple...

I would love to have all my files render at the highest quality possible, but that causes problems. A small subset of my files simply contain far too many links to external sources. When viewing one of these files on typical display settings my computer can handle it, but when I try to view it on highest display performance, the program literally crashes and stops responding, giving that all so helpful "Windows is searching for a solution to this problem" prompt that never does anyone any good >.<

This is only a small group of my files that have this problem. I'd like to have InDesign by default always have display performance on highest so that I may enjoy viewing my files for what they actually are instead of blurry masses, but for these few files that have this problem I'd like to be able to set "local preferences" to them, so that when I open them InDesign will automatically use typical display performance.

Any ideas?

Right/Control click on the image > Display Performance, and select Fast Display etc. as appropriate.

NB - then a further two options will become available allowing you to switch off Object-level display settings if you wish.

NB 2 - you may need to go to Preferences > Display Performance and check the "Preserve Object-level Display Settings" box if it's not already checked, otherwise it will lose your settings upon saving.
