InDesign - going back to Quark...

What is it with InDesign in Leopard?! Using CS3.3 on OS 10.5.2 (I daren't update until I KNOW that these issues have been resolved), documents either won't hide, won't open, disappear (requiring a force-quit) - the only advantage over using Quark is its caching of files so they open up intact when you re-open them.

It's winding me right up. I HATE Quark 7 with a passion, but if this unproductive time (and it mounts up during the course of a day, it's that bad...) continues to materialise, I can't see another option...

Someone - please tell me how to stop all this!!!

I've had these same issues with Leopard and InDesign CS3...haven't run across a solution yet, but am interested to see what others have to say.

I have an upgrade to CS4 sitting in a drawer, but am waiting for a plug-in to be updated with CS4 compatibility.
 
I do have the same problems. If I make a mistake and press Command + H, InDesign will hide, but never comes back. I have to do a a Force-quit to close the app and the restart it.

Config: Mac mini 1,83 GHz, 4 GB RAM
Software: Adobe CS3 Design Standard, Adobe InDesign CS3 5.0.4
OS: MacOS X Leopard 10.5.6

The same problem exist on MacOS X 10.5.3, 10.5.4, 10.5.5, 10.5.6

Nothing changed. Contacted Adobe Support, they recommended, that i upgrade my suite to CS4, and they said i can get some % off the price, since there won't be any update for the old Indesign CS3.

The funny is, this problem doesn't exist on MacOS X Tiger. :mad:
 
Can I run Tiger on an Aluminium iMac 2.8? I'm really pretty miffed about all of this!..
 
I would try updating everything first before trying a clean install of Tiger, even if your machine will let you run an older OS. Hell, I would try ditching InDesign's preferences before trying to run it on a new account, before the hassle of a clean install.

I've had no problems with InDesign (CS3) 5.0.4 on OS X 10.5.6, even with hiding documents and the app with Command + H. Runs like a dream.

Depends when said iMac was bought. Mine can run Tiger because I got it in September 2007 before Leopard was released. If you purchased your machine after 10/11 2007 (don't remeber the exact release date of 10.5) and it came with Leopard preinstalled you can't install Tiger as far as I know.

Ditto all of that. I haven't had any problems since I updated to 10.5.5, much less 10.5.6. Also, on the rare occasions InDesign does crash on me, I always get my doc back with very little lost. At most I have to replicate 5 minutes' worth of work.
 
My ID gets quarkee sometimes. It does drive me crazy when I can't hide things. I haven't really worked with spaces, but I guess that could be a way of hiding ID.
 
Well it's better than using CS2 on an intel mac :rolleyes:. I nearly tore a nut off in frustration with all the crashes I got in Illustrator. InDesign wasn't as bad.

I updated to CS4 today in work. Really like it. Wouldn't pay for the upgrade for my home machine, but using InDesign is a joy. Especially the smart guide and preflight options.
 
WEIRD! My brother uses indesign cs3 on a mac mini with 1 gig of ram and it works like a champ.

I would try doing some maintenance first. Try Onyx, which is free, run ALL of the maintenance scripts, maybe defrag if you have the program. iDefrag works pretty good. Then check the adobe forums if anyone has had the same issues.

Could be a font issue perhaps?
 
Like others have said above 10.5.6 was supposed to fix the hiding problem. And I've read others saying it cleared up their CS3 Indy problems. I never ran into it on my unibody MBP when I was running CS3. And CS4 has been just fine as well. Guess I've been lucky not to run into any of the Leopard "issues" with CS3. That being said I couldn't bring myself to switch to Quark after using Indesign for these last 4 years or so. Quark is too much of an odd man out now with the rest of my workflow. It would be nice for another real competitor to Adobe would pop up.
 
I have run into these problems as well. I haven't noticed it lately (maybe it's the 10.5.6 update, but i'm not sure.) But I will NEVER go back to Quark. I thought it was only me having those InDesign issues!
 
Ha. I'd rather go back to paper, scissors, and glue than go back to quark. I have the latest version of quark on my machine because sometimes clients provide artwork files in quark format and I need to get them finalized, but every time I open it, i have to fight down a panic attack because all of the old memories start flooding in. i didn't realize how much I hated it while i was using quark. i used to say I would never leave quark. 2 weeks with IDCS, and it was game over. Sort of like being in a really, really abusive relationship...you ignore the problems and keep telling yourself that you're happy, and besides, it's YOUR fault things aren't working out properly...

I've had some real issues with CS3 and 10.5, but most of my real issues are just with 10.5 itself. I hate the way spotlight works now. It ruined some very, very good workflows I'd developed in 10.4. New mac pro, new OS, no choice to downgrade. tim's back channel blog indicated that the problems were almost all on Apple's end. that's why there weren't a bunch of CS3 updates for indesign...Adobe can't patch OS X themselves...

I read this headline and just started laughing...NOBODY who has really used indesign after 2.0 is going to willingly revert to Quark...maybe those people who try to run OS 8 natively on their G4 towers that they just bought in 2008 with the turbocharger chips and all that crap. Maybe those guys...but are they really seriously using page layout/design software? no.
