InDesign keeps quitting on launch

I have Adobe CS3. InDesign has started quitting on launch for over a fortnight now, so I've been unable to use it. I've tried reinstalling, removing preferences, and repairing Macintosh HD. Nothing has helped. I haven't even installed anything new which could have affected it. On a recommendation, I downloaded Linotype Font Explorer to replace Font Book for font management, but that didn't help either. Any suggestions? Anyone else had this problem? I haven't registered my CS3 yet but Photoshop and Illustrator work fine. The only other software programme installed that I use frequently is Freehand 10.

Do you have a crash log or can you see in the startup dialogue window what is going on when it crashes? Could be helpful to know what process is going on when the crash occurs. Did it work for a while and then just stop? You said that you didn't install anything that you thought would affect it, but did you install anything right before it started locking out?

As a side note: from experiences at work where everyone asks the young guy what's wrong with their computers, sometimes doing some research on error codes online (Google, forums, knowledgebases, etc.) can help to figure out what's going on. Sometimes it's as simple as a font conflict or bad preference file that hoses everything else.

Do you have a beta copy of ID or any other Adobe software on your machine? If so, that may be interfering with your installation.

Try uninstalling and then run this.

InDesign still crashing...and worse

Thank you all for your help. Macstudent, I do have a proper registered copy of CS3 and no Beta copies of any software on my Macbook. I did run the cs3 clean you suggested after uninstalling CS3 then reinstalled with no improvement I'm sorry to say.

Flrazor, I think you might be right about a bad preference or font conflict. This is an excerpt from the crash log where the actual crash happens...

The weird thing is that matters have worsened in that menus are now displaying incorrectly. Only the lower half of words display in menus and even Safari won't open. The only way around this at the moment is by doing a safe boot with the shift key down. Any suggestions?

I might have to remove all of my fonts and replace them one at a time to see if one is causing a problem. How do I do that with extensions? I'm used to the system 9 extension manager. What do you do in Tiger?

I've had this happen before and it was a font conflict for me, but also could be the prefs file. I would recommend first doing a permissions repair in Disk Utility just to make sure there aren't other troubles plaguing your system, then as far as the fonts go I would download FontNuke (free app) to wipe your font caches out. They get rebuit whenever you start up programs or the system again, just like if a preference file is missing. Tossing the old prefs file for InDesign might help with that as well.

If you do just have a bad font, rather than doing it 1 file at a time you should try a "binary search" method. Activate half your fonts and try to start up ID, if it starts then the bad font(s) is not in the bunch you tried, if it crashes then it is part of that block. Cut the list of suspects in half again and repeat. It should take less than 10 times to find it if it's one single font (unless you have more than 1024 fonts). Did this exact thing last year at work and found it in 6 tries.
