InDesign text wrap question...

Hopefully this has a simple answer... When I create an object in Illustrator and import it into InDesign (I tried both "placing" the object and cutting and pasting it in), it imports the object with a straight-lined box around it -- I would like to have text wrap to the shape of the object, but because of this box, the text only "wraps" to the straight line of the box surrounding it.

I have selected the "wrap around object shape" button in the text wrap palette and that doesn't solve the problem.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Do you have "Detect Edges" selected in the drop down box?

hmmm...i don't know. Copy, Paste should work. Go to Illustrator > Preferences > File Handling & Clipboard.

Make sure that Preserve paths is selected. I would also check PDF if it's not selected as well.

I just don' tknow...i did it like 5 times, just now. the illustrator object is all vector right? How complex is it? is a group? If it's a group of objects it won't work. You'll have to have a single shape to do this. If it has to be a group...then make a single shape that matches the shape of the group and then stack them. Keep the main group seperate from the other piece. Copy both at the same time, paste them in, and then only select the bottom piece to be the text wrap.

of course, if the group thing isn't it...then i have no idea.

Okay, awesome. Both of these suggestions work, depending on whether I chose to "place" the file or copy/paste it...

You can also manually edit InDesign text boxes with the pen tool as you would any other path.
This is useful for creating interesting text boxes, as well as selectively wrapping text around images that have square bounding boxes.
