I'm reposting this from your other thread... also please try to keep one thread only, having multiple threads about the same thing in different forums is considered spam...

You can't buy at the subsidized pricing because that requires you to sign a new 2-year agreement.

You have to buy the more expensive $599 and $699 options available in Apple Stores or AT&T corporate stores. Be sure to tell them you want the non-commitment pricing.

To be able to unlock it and use it in India, just use RedSn0w.

Is your flight direct to the US? if not, you can maybe pass by any of the countries that sell it unlocked (if you want the peace of mind of not worrying about using software to unlock it every time an apple update comes).

Countries that currently sell the iphone unlocked include: Italy, Belgium, Australia, and New Zealand.

does that mean i cant buy the iphone for 199$. do u have to sign on the spot

:) $199! no way. You only get it this cheap, if you sign a contract (i.e. you will need a credit history in whichever country you are visiting). The countries i mentioned you will be charged at least a $800 to buy the iphone unlocked and without a contract.

Unlock begore u activate

hi...where in the US are you coming? In US you can do to an AT&T store or an APPLE store and pay I believe the full price to buy it with out contract. I believe it $500- $600 depending on the model you want.

you can get it unlocked for $50 or so. just do a craigslist search for someone in the area you are visiting.

Craiglist search???

I am sorry.. i have no idea of what a craiglist search is..
i am visiting NYC and ILLINOIS and i am meeting only green card holders(temporary citizenship) from india. is it possible for one of tem to buy the Iphone 3G s for 199$? then maybe i can have it unlocked before activating it and wont have to pay any money to AT&T

To get the iPhone at $199 you MUST sign a 2 year contract with AT&T. You can get out of this AFTER 30 days and pay a $175 early termination fee. So to get the iPhone subsidized, you have to do the following:

1. Pay $199 + tax
2. Sign 2 year contract which requires you to be a US Citizen with a SSN and credit history
3. Stick with the service for 31 days and pay the first month's bill ($100ish)
4. Pay the ETF $175

So... it will probably cost you $500 in the end anyways.

I think that would be impossible for you to do. Buy unlocked from a local seller on craiglist.org, from eBay, or from one of the perviously mentioned countries that sell the iPhone factory unlocked.

If you buy from the countries i mentioned, you don't need to sign any contract. Its like buying an ipod or a macbook. These phones are already unlocked. So if you buy them, you only need to insert your indian simcard and connect to itune and here you go your iphone is unlocked forever.

If you want to buy it cheap, you will need to sign a contract as the guys mentioned above. Yes, one of your friends in the USA can buy it for you but he/she will be stuck with paying the monthly rental for the next two years . So, if you are not keen on buying it from the countries i mentioned, then buy it from ebay or craiglist but then you need to be careful as there is a risk you might be scammed.
