How do you know the Mac mini is sleeping ?. Does the Power LED double as a sleep "pulsing" indication ?

As when I'm in OS X installer (booted from usb), if i'm busy doing a secure wipe on drive, i need to constantly move the mouse every 5 minutes or so so it will stay awake....

Technically, i've never really seem Mac min sleep unless i was getting the wrong impression.. It's just i was assuming this based on how the Macbook Pro LED pulses, so naturally i would think its the same with the mini...

Is this true ?
 
it is.

The only reason in my experience for the mini not to 'sleep' is if you have it set up as a wifi hotspot as I do for my iPad. There may be other reasons but Im unaware of them.
 
Well, if you're doubtful of the validity of an official document from Apple's support site, please contact them. No one here edits that site.

If they change the document based on your communications, please feel free to update this thread with a full account of your adventures in correcting an Apple support document.

If the front panel LED on your mini pulses when the screen goes dark, then your mini is sleeping. If the LED remains steady, then your mini is not sleeping.

Test that by using the Apple menu/Sleep, and wait a few seconds for your mini to settle into sleep.
Does your power LED pulse?
And, it should wake again by simply pressing any key.

If you are booted to the installer, then the system will respond differently - and I think that an actual sleep is disabled when booted to the OS X install (or booted to your recovery disk) - and energy settings are at some default, so you may see the screen dim, or go black.
Again, when booted to the system installer, and your screen goes black, it should not be sleeping - with the pulsing power LED, just a steady power LED. The screen should come back to bright by touching any key.
 
You will know when it is sleeping when the LED pulses. Also the fan and HDDs will be switched off. Although if you have an SSD you obviously won't hear it spin down like a HDD.

If you are running something then it may not sleep. Depends on the app.

I press the power bottom to make it sleep and click the touchpad a few times to wake it.

Alternatively, I use the Caffeine app to keep the mini awake.
